Dangote exposes two biggest problems to industrialisation in Nigeria

Image
Africa’s richest man and billionaire, Aliko Dangote , has revealed that unstable electricity supply and inconsistencies in government policies have remained major problem for industrialisation in Nigeria. Dangote made this known recently when the Zambian Minister of Energy, Makozo Chikote, visited the Dangote refinery in Lekki, Lagos State. According to him, his company’s most profitable cement factory is the one in Ethiopia because of its stable power supply. He explained that without power supply, businesses cannot grow. “If there’s no power, there won’t be growth. For example, anything I’m going to do abroad will cost me maybe 30 percent cheaper than here, because abroad is plug-and-play. “You just go, no infrastructure construction. You just build a factory, and you connect to the network; that’s all. “That’s why, if you look at it today, I tell you that our most profitable cement factory is in Ethiopia because there’s no investment in power. They gave us power at the same rate for...

Trump ignores UK Prime Minister, pushes Ukraine’s defence responsibility to Europe

Image
United States of America,  President Donald Trump  has clearly stated that it is up to Europe to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, and there will be no guarantees of Washington’s involvement. He made the comments during his first cabinet meeting and ahead of meeting UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the White House. Ahead of the talks, Starmer has stressed his call for a US security guarantee in Ukraine to deter Vladimir Putin from invading again. However, Trump’s reaction means Starmer stands alone in his call. In a related development, Trump’s first cabinet meeting confirmed that  President Volodymyr Zelensky  will visit the Oval Office on Friday to sign a “very big” agreement on sharing Ukraine’s mineral resources. Meanwhile, Zelensky has described the bilateral deal as preliminary and has said he wants further agreements that include US security guarantees to deter renewed Russian aggression. With his ”Drill Baby Drill” energy policy, President Trump said America would invest in fossil energy resources, and boost oil and gas output in order to meet its domestic needs, a development analysts said could lead to over-supply and low prices in the international market. Reacting, the director/CEO, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, CPPE, Dr. Muda Yusuf, said President Trump’s policy would hinder the realization of Nigeria’s $75 per barrel 2025 budget target, escalate high inflation while stalling Diaspora remittances. He said: “USA has been the largest oil producer globally for the past six years, noting that in 2023, it produced an average of 21.91 milli...

NLC fumes on Telecoms tariff hike, gives March 1 alert to shut telecoms services

Image
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has expressed outrage over the hike in tariffs by telecommunications companies, despite an earlier agreement reached with the Federal Government and the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, and demanded immediate reversal of the increase to avoid unpleasant consequences. However, the operators are not taking any of NLC’s threats, warning that labour’s actions would amount to a treasonable felony. Recall that the Federal Government and NLC had about two weeks ago, emerged from a meeting convened by the former to see how the price hike could be reduced from the proposed 50 %. A 10-man committee, comprising five members from each of the two parties, was constituted and given two weeks to further deliberate on the issue before a decision was taken. Real Madrid's late turnaround exposes Pep's Manchester City decline

Image
Real Madrid once again twisted the knife into Pep Guardiola's Manchester City to compound a troubled season for the English champions and leave them on the brink of an early Champions League exit. Twice  City  led at the Etihad as Erling Haaland finally came to the party against the Spanish giants with his first two goals in five games against Madrid. But the Norwegian's goals cannot paper over the glaring cracks for City this season. Madrid had been wasteful for 85 minutes and would have headed home cursing their finishing but for a late flourish. Brahim Diaz netted against this former club just seconds after coming off the bench before Jude Bellingham, on his return to England, tapped home the winner in stoppage time after another City defensive calamity. City have now conceded eight goals in the final 15 minutes of their last five Champions League games. Late goals have also been a problem for Guardiola in the Premier League, w...
